The Story

Nami Washi Tea Caddy

A high-quality metal tin with a removable lid covered expertly with very durable Japanese paper (washi) by hand.Ā

Ā

The term is used to describe paper that uses local fiber, processed by hand and made in the traditional manner.Ā WashiĀ is made using fibers from the inner bark of theĀ gampiĀ tree, theĀ mitsumataĀ shrub (Edgeworthia chrysantha), or theĀ paper mulberryĀ (kōzo) bush.Ā As aĀ Japanese craft, it is registered as a UNESCOĀ intangible cultural heritage.Ā Ā

Ā

WashiĀ is generally tougher than ordinary paper made fromĀ wood pulpĀ and is used in many traditional arts.Ā Origami,Ā Shodo, andĀ Ukiyo-eĀ were all produced usingĀ washi.Ā WashiĀ was also used to make various everyday goods like clothes, household goods, and toys, as well as vestments and ritual objects forĀ ShintoĀ priests and statues ofĀ Buddha.Ā
